I have been practicing law since 1980 both inside and outside Sudan, in a variety of fields within the legal consultancy profession. With this diversified legal experience in the early years of my practice, I specialized in corporate and commercial law in my professional as well as academic career. My specialization came on the back of a solid general legal practice.

I started my career inside Sudan by practicing in a prominent lawyers' firm, then as legal advisor at the helm of the executive branch of the government. Later, when I did my PhD I conducted a thorough research in Sudanese civil law. This gave me an in-depth knowledge of the Sudanese law and legal system.

My practice outside Sudan was also diversified:

as a legal advisor in a lawyers' firm in Saudi Arabia (associated with a well known large US lawyers' firm) advising multinational corporations, public companies as well as family owned businesses, and as in-house legal counsel for a family owned conglomerate with businesses in various countries (including Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, U.S.A, Indonesia and Malaysia) involved in transactions with other family owned businesses, public companies and multinational corporations.

This gave me first hand experience and in-depth knowledge at the cutting edge contract point between business and law, including trans-border and multi-jurisdiction transactions. This

experience was very useful as it made me able to look into law from the perspective of the need of the business, not as cold rigid rules to which the business must comply.

Such awareness opens door to innovation; there is always room for innovation within the scope of legal rules especially in the field of commercial law. An important aspect of modern legal consultancy is for the consultant to understand the real needs of the business and the time and regulatory constrains under which today's businessperson acts.

Handling of the legal affairs of several offshore companies put me in a position to be aware of the pros and cons of doing business through offshore vehicles, and to establish contacts with lawyers and professional firms in various offshore centres across the world. My work outside Sudan also has given me the chance to work closely with lawyers' firms in different parts of the world. This networking is important for the clients in today's globalized business environment. Work as team member in handling various transactions has developed my awareness of having a holistic view of any transaction and looking into the whole picture (whether legal/ financial/ environmental/ tax ….etc).

My specialization in corporate and commercial law and my practical experience cover areas such as company law, law of contract, insurance, banking law, law of finance, intellectual property, joint ventures, carriage contracts, construction law, shipping law, acquisitions and mergers, energy law, mining law, telecommunications, international trade and arbitration.

In 2005, I set up my own legal practice in Khartoum, with the aim of providing high quality legal service to the top segment of the business community in Sudan, and assisting local and foreign companies to establish operations in Sudan whether independently or in association with local partners. Using the facilities of a well-equipped law office my intention is to put the experience and knowledge gained over more than 28 years of legal practice at the disposal of the client, based on a mixture of knowledge of Sudanese laws and international exposure.

Being specialized in legal consultancy and transactions, in complex cases of litigation I co-operate with a number of reputable local lawyers. Currently advocate Muna Ahmed Ali is my junior assistant lawyer, mainly in charge of litigations and registration procedures under my supervision. With the expansion of client base, my plan is to develop into a medium size law firm. With the potential economic growth, and growing investment opportunities, Sudan, and particularly the business sector, is in real need of such firms.

My firm is Member of Africa Legal Network (ALN), an independent alliance of leading law firms in Africa.
